Choreographic Saloon
The “Choreographic Salon” project was initiated in 2022, in Maputo, by João dos Santos Martins with a group of twenty Mozambican dancers and choreographers, hosted by Camões — Portuguese Cultural Center. This initiative began as a space for sharing urgent issues within choreographic practice, aiming to be a place for experimentation and discussion, exchange, and collective learning, centered around the materials and questions brought by the participants.
“What moves us? What are the individual and collective concerns in dance and choreographic practice today? How do we develop our work, and how does the context inform that work? What practices do we want to transmit? What memory for the future?” — these were some of the questions that guided the first gathering in 2022.
For the second edition of the Choreographic Salon, Camões, in partnership with Associação Parasita (Lisbon), invited nine participants for a two-week artistic residency, held from May 27 to June 6, 2024. This time, new concerns were activated—linking the world and life to artistic practice. Between daily survival, desires and ambitions for the future, and, on the other hand, the simple act of being together and enjoying each other’s company, this edition of the Salon took shape day by day through dance practices and collective conversations.
