Oldschool #40, 2015

“My first encounter with dance’s kinetic depletion as still-act, as a suspensive response to the pressing political events, happened during the fall of 1992, when a series of still-acts were presented by a diverse group of choreographers (…) at Cité Universitaire in Paris, for a month-long choreographic laboratory titled SKITE. The insertion of the still-act had all to do with violent performances of colonialism and its racisms. This was the fall after the first Gul War. The civil was in Bosnia- -Herzegovina was raging. The Los Angeles uprisings had just happened. In SKITE, Portuguese choreographer Vera Mantero and Spanish choreographer Santiago Sempere both stated that the political events in the world were such that they could not dance.” André Lepecki in ‘Exhausting Dance’.
