From where can we rethink our world in order to transform it? Philippe Descola dedicated his life as an anthropologist to studying how humans make up their worlds. In a journey that began in the Amazon, he turned his field of research to Europe to understand how we modern people have managed to make the Earth less and less habitable. In this film, Descola embodies his ideas, in dialogue with the non-humans around us, at the centre of a social experiment that is unique in the world: the community of Notre-Dame-des-Landes in France. There, on and with the earth saved from cement, in the place where the construction of a pharaonic airport was planned, a new composition of the world is unfolding. At the end of the screening, Rita Natálio, artist and curator of the Terra Batida project, will talk to us about the issues raised by the film.

December

* Borders that don’t exist, Porto Design Biennale, 10 December.

In an intertidal zone, the boundaries are constantly changing. The liquid tide covers and uncovers the land, but in between the coming and going it becomes entrenched, embedded in the damp sand, stones and beings of the ecosystems of these areas. On the bank of a river, water circulates in a spiral, creating deposits and eroding the land’s edge – it’s an infinite process of transformation. The water seeps into the earth, first liquid, then in the form of humidity. We don’t know when it becomes muddy, then clay and finally earth. Here we bring together people who urge us to design and think from an idea of the intertwining of all things, proposing alternative models of relationship and order that promote porous materialities, inclusive projects, interspecies dialogues and more equitable democracies.

2022

October to November

* Laboratory in the Master’s programme in Performance and Gender Studies at the IUAV – University of Venice

June to October

* Coordination of Laboratório Imagina 20–25 [Imagine Laboratory], Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

The “Gulbenkian Imagines” project is an initiative of the Modern Art Centre for young audiences based on imagination laboratories guided by guest artists around the idea of the future.
