AROUND THE DEFINITION OF GESTURE IN DIGITAL REPRESENTATIONS OF THE DANCING BODY
Chapter of a book that discusses the expression of choreographic ideas through digital media, focusing on the software “Gesture Follower”, created to recognize gestures in the framework of a choreographic transmission practice, the workshop “Double Skin/Double Mind” by the artists Emio Greco and Pieter Scholten. The article discusses how these expressions are particular solutions to generic problems of choreographic transmission, in this case as a result of digitally automated algorithmic procedures. The discussion of this software allows us to distinguish between a dancing body and a gestural body and, from the perspective of digital algorithms, to problematize the relationship between dance and writing with regard to the constitution and transmission of choreographic knowledge.
