The shadow of a country does not leave her body. Present but ignored, this shade is part of the subject and its cultural identity. Ana Rita Teodoro creates a series of “tableaux vivants”. Framed images where a song emerges from a mouth disconnected of its voice, using a ventriloquist technique. SHADE seeks to understand through dance and the reactivation of traditional Portuguese songs, the ghosts that haunt us today. Call them. Listen to their voices and by the means of dissociation, look for a transgression.

Oriented to women’s songs, they are selected from the registers of Giacometti (60 and 70) and the current project of Tiago Pereira MPAGDP(A Música Portuguesa A Gostar Dela Própria). A pretext to talk about women’s condition and traditional projections on what is or what a women should be. The selected songs worked as a gesture of emancipation, which at their time perverted the “traditional” women, the good wife, good daughter, good mother, devoted to God. What place remains for the songs of the past, threatened to disappear in the oblivion of the archives? Songs swallowed by the shadow of time, claim their current voices.

Something from the past is insisting on today. “The shadow that haunts” (SHADE), expresses an identity crisis, tactics for transgression.
